Substance is a portrait and editorial studio in New York. We work with a handful of people each month, in one room, with one window, and we stay until something real shows up.
Elena started the studio after ten years of fast commercial work. She wanted a place where the light, the time and the person got more attention than the schedule. Today a small team of three keeps it that way.
We shoot, edit and print in house. Every frame you see on this site passed through the same hands from the first call to the last print.

(Timeline) 2014 to now
2014
One room on Orchard Street, one window and one assistant. The first year was 31 portraits.
2016
Eight pages for a quarterly on the people who keep the city standing.
2019
We started printing in house, so every frame is judged on paper before it leaves.
2022
A portrait series made over three winter mornings that set the studio’s way of working.
2025
Still small on purpose. Four people, one room, a handful of shoots each month.

Surface
We start with the room and the person. No scripts, no direction for the first twenty minutes.
(02)
Grain
We shoot for texture. The file keeps what the eye feels in the room.
(03)
Weight
Every frame is judged on how it holds, not how it looks on a screen.
(04)
Selects are printed, pinned up and lived with before anything is delivered.
